Patchouli is a lush perennial herb that can reach up to one meter in height. It has soft oval leaves and white with purple flowers. Patchouli is native from Southeast Asia, it now grows wild in Sumatra and Java, at altitudes between 900 and 1,800 meters.
The popular name of patchouli essential oil is derived from the Hindustani word pacholi. In the 19th century, it was used to diffuse Indian cloth and shawls. It was popular with the British Empire because cloth and silk from India were scented with patchouli and the scent could avoid insects during the transport. Essential oils that have been extracted for a longer period of time are more popular than newly extracted essential oils. Patchouli is often used in the perfume industry as fixative, and it helps the fragrance of other more expensive essential oils to last longer.
