Frankincense originates from the Middle East. It is a small, shaggy and hard shrub that can grow to three to seven meters in height. It has dense pointed leaves and pure white or pale pink flowers. When the trunk is cut, a fragrant and viscous white liquid resin will flow out. When the resin hardens, it will turn into a brown-orange gel. After drying, this will be collected and distilled into precious essential oil. The name of frankincense essential oil is derived from the Arabic word "al-luban", which means milky sap.

In Indian tradition, frankincense is called "dhupa", which means "the consciousness that exists in the whole universe or in living things.” Burning frankincense is regarded as a worshiping custom. In the West, according to biblical records, frankincense, myrrh, and gold were gifts brought by the three wise men from the East when Jesus was born. Therefore, burning frankincense in churches can assist meditation or prayer. The ancient Egyptians burned frankincense into a black powder and painted it on their eyelids as a cosmetic. Frankincense is widely used in today's perfume industry as a fixative for perfumes and is also used in skin care products.
