Of large tree species, it can grow up to 20 meters or higher, the fruit is a spherical drupe,which turns from green to brown when mature, and blooms white flowers. The inner layer of the drupe is the kernel, and tamanu oil is extracted from the kernel. It originates from India,Malaysia, the Pacific Islands, and can also be seen in Taiwan.

In traditional Polynesian culture, tamanu oil is widely used in traditional medicine. It is called Sacred Oil and Sacred Tree. The original name of “Tamanu'' comes from the language of the indigenous people of Tahiti.

Tamanu oil is widely used in aromatherapy, and it can be used directly on the skin and hair. It has a slightly nutty fragrance.
