Rosemary is a perennial evergreen shrub with a strong fragrance, about 80 to 180 cm in height, with needle-like and silver-green leaves. Its flowers are light blue. Originally grown in the Mediterranean region, it is now found in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and California.
The name rosemary is derived from the Latin phrase “ros marinos” which means “dew from the ocean”. According to the records of flora in the early 11th century, rosemary is a herb for cooking, a herb for healing, and can also be used as a perfume. Rosemary is one of the materials used to make Queen of Hungary’s Water, which is the predecessor of cologne. Rosemary is also a nectar plant. It is one of the earliest distilled essential oils. In ancient Egypt, people would burn their twigs as a ritual incense. In the eyes of ancient Greeks and Romans, this plant was sacred and a symbol of loyalty, death and remembrance. At weddings and important occasions, people would wear rosemary wreaths and headdresses as a symbol of trust and loyalty. It is also believed to bring good luck and provide protection.
