Cypress grows in the Mediterranean, Cyprus, Italy and Iran. It is an evergreen coniferous tree that can grow to 35 meters high. It is a cone-shaped tree with needle-shaped leaves and grows small flowers. It bears brown-gray conifer cones. Because of the tall and thin characteristics of cypress, it has the nickname of pencil pine. Cypress has a long life span, and some can live up to 1000 years. Its Latin scientific name "sempervirens" means evergreen.
Because of its evergreen and longevity characteristics, it was first used in ancient Egypt to make sarcophagi, and in ancient Greece, cypress was dedicated to the god of the underworld, Hades. Therefore, it is regarded as the sacred tree of the god Pluto in Greek mythology, and it represents eternal life and comfort. From then on, in cemeteries in the Mediterranean, the figure of cypress can be seen as a symbol of sorrow and as a source of comfort. In ancient times, cypress was used as an incense with a purifying effect.
