Niaouli is an evergreen plant with elastic branches and a sponge-like bark. Its leaves are elongated and have spike-like sessile flowers. Niaouli mainly grows in Indonesia, Australia and New Caledonia. It was first used by local residents to purify water. It was not introduced to Europe until the 17th century. Captain Cook named the plant while sailing in Australia. Although it is sometimes called Gomenol in France, because in the past, Niaouli grew in the Gomenol region of the French East Indies.
The smell of niaouli is similar to that of eucalyptus. It has a strong, sweet and fresh scent of camphor. Aromatherapist Schnaubelt once mentioned that this kind of essential oil is very important in the application of French aromatherapy. Nowadays, niaouli is added to many daily necessities, such as mouthwash, toothpaste and oral care products.
