Ylang ylang is a tropical evergreen tree that can grow up to 20 meters in height. The oval shape of the leaves are large and shiny, the flowers are long, narrow and drooping. The flowers are white when they first open, then turn green, and then yellow. Its flowering season is throughout the year, but it grows more lush when it is warm and humid. The essential oil lies in freshly picked flowers.
The name ylang ylang comes from the Filipino word “alang-ilang”, which refers to flowers that "hang" or "flutter" in the breeze. The islanders will immerse it in coconut oil to make a fragrant oil called “boori-boori”, which is used as a body lotion. They also rub its essential oils on the hair to block the seawater when swimming. In the early Victorian era, ylang ylang was a hair care product. In Indonesia, ylang ylang flowers are placed on the bed of newlyweds because ylang ylang is believed to be an aphrodisiac. Ylang ylang has long been one of the most important raw materials in the perfume industry.
